Life in the Oasis.

What it is really like to live in a little country called Qatar- the people, the places and the things that go un-noticed.

What the Kony?

A few seconds after I watched the 29 minute 59 second video about a war criminal named Joseph Kony, my facebook profile picture was the face of this man I just found out about. I reposted the video and urged my friends to watch it.

Joseph Kony is one of the most vilified rebel leaders on the planet. He stands accused of brainwashing countless children across northern Uganda, turning the girls into sex slaves and the boys into prepubescent killers.

STOP KONY.

I spent the rest of the evening looking at the official website, desperate to find a way that I could help in any small way that I could.

The video inspired me. It made me feel like I could make a difference. It made me think about all of the events that has ever happened in the history of this planet- especially the Holocaust. A poster that the Invisible Children had plastered all over the internet may have influenced me even more than the sensational movie: Joseph Kony in the forefront, Osama Bin Laden and Adolf Hitler in the background.

But then I went back on facebook only to find a huge wave of cynicism.

I am often one to blindly believe in the good of mankind but this was probably the worst case of my naive judgment. I had not thought to research about the financial records of the organization or of the motives of the director of the movie. I had not even questioned if this was what the Ugandan people wanted for themselves.

So I finally did a little research. This is what I found: ‘Uganda Oil Reserves rival Saudi Arabia’s.’

Also, apparently, only 30% of all of the money goes to children itself. The rest have been spent on travel, marketing, making the film, etc.

It may be true that because of social network, our generation has the power to mobilize people by the thousands for a common cause but will we ever be able to agree on a single cause without being conflicted by so many negative voices?

I have still not decided how I feel about this issue- whether I support it or I’m completely against it. But hopefully, with enough research and the investigation of the press, the world will be able to put this argument to bed soon.

I won’t lie: I really hope that Jason Russell only really cared about the 30,000 children that were being abducted and that if at all he has a motive, it is that he wants to make the world better so he can prove something to his adorable son.

Sad, I know.

Awesome people in this world: example #1
This is my best friend. She is an Angel. And her name is Angel. And I love her. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, smart and funny.
Please send a virtual hug or take a picture of your friend and let her/him know just how awesome they are.

The always unsatisfactory weather of Doha.

Hot winds blowing on your face, while the first drop of sweat drips from the back your neck and all you can think of is “I wonder if winter could come any quicker.” People in Doha have never been happy about the weather. Nine months of hot, sultry summers and three months of the highly anticipated winter. Despite working, studying and living in all fully air-conditioned buildings, summer will always be despised. But even that is being called into question, in this cold torturous month.

According to the weather forecast on the dashboard of my MacBook Pro, the lowest weather that we can expect all week is today- 14 degree Celsius. That doesn’t seem too low, but one of my friends from Russia claims that even though Russia gets colder, it is still pleasant. Not Doha though.

Huddling in sweaters, heavy jackets, scarves and boots (boots!) people still complain that the weather is too harsh, not much better than the harsh summer, but my I don’t feel the same. Now, we can go for picnics at the Aspire park or go for a walk at the Corniche or visit the distressed animals at the zoo without feeling nauseous. How hard can wearing 3 layers of clothes and having a nose- red from the cold, be anyway?

How do you feel about the weather?

Why Tejas Kumar is worth knowing about.

Tejas Kumar has a personality that makes you want to be best friends with him almost as soon as you’ve met him and it really does seem that in every place he’s been, people feel the same way as I do. Tejas is 18, turning 19 in February and has had hemophilia since birth. His disease has always been the reason he missed classes at high school or wasn’t able to go to a pool party or bowling with his friends because those activities that were what other teenagers would do for fun, was an activity that could put his entire life at risk. Yet, even more so than a normal, healthy teenager, Tejas lives life so fully.

Because he’s unable to go away to another country to study what he is passionate about, he attends takes classes at the Audio Institute of America to pursue his dream of becoming a music producer some day. Meanwhile, he works at a company at The Pearl as a Graphic Design Intern and lives every single day like it is his last.

Other sources that I would like to interview are his mother, his doctor, his employer, his online instructor and his best friend.

By telling Tejas’ story, I hope to be able to inspire other teenagers who are suffering in similar situations and struggle with living life to their best ability.

I don’t give a damn about ‘reputation.’ If I’m wrong I correct or re-think. Once a writer worries about these things, he’s like an actor watching the audience. In my opinion, far too many journalists worry about their reputation.

This is a killer journalism quote that’s likely to be overlooked by the comment that came just before it (no pun intended), from Andrew Sullivan’s live chat. (via newsweek)
